Description

The Olympic Torch Relay passes through our district on Friday June 22 on its 70 day, 8000 mile British leg of the journey finishing at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony of the 2012 games on July 28. Don`t miss out on the once in a life time chance to see the torch pass through the beautiful backdrop of Morecambe Bay and Lancaster. Following the procession, there will be a weekend showcase called 'Velocity' highlighting all the sporting assets on offer in the district including a cycle race, and a wide selection of water sports.

MORE ABOUT VELOCITY:
Taking place on the weekend of June 22 to 24, the Velocity Festival will celebrate the very best sporting activities the Lancaster district has to offer.

The festival will build on the excitement brought by the Olympic Torch, which is passing through the district on June 22. It kicks off that evening with a cycle road race in Lancaster, building on the district’s growing reputation as a major destination for cyclists and cycle tourism.

Up to 120 riders will battle it out in two races over a course which is sure to put their abilities to the test – the cobbles and narrow streets around the Dalton Square area of the city.

And while spectators enjoy the sport, Dalton Square will be hosting a local food event on the Friday evening, carrying on over the following weekend (June 23 and 24).

The festival will feature music, family entertainment, food and drink. Expect to see a celebration of the best of the region; family entertainment, live bands and performers, street theatre, food and drink from local producers, local brewery ales and ciders.

The food festival will be open on Friday (afternoon and evening), Saturday (afternoon and evening) and Sunday (afternoon).

And the fun doesn’t stop there. On Saturday and Sunday (June 23 and 24) the action moves to Morecambe.

Showcasing the resort's natural assets - and set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Morecambe Bay – the Velocity Festival will be a high octane event, packed with exhilarating watersports. Watch expert kitesurfers and jet skiers do their stuff, or come and have a go yourself at sailing and kayaking.

And that's not all - the cool vibe will be continued with live music and BMX displays.

There's also a range of organised cycle rides from Salt Ayre Sports Centre to Glasson Dock and Caton and more live music up at Williamson Park in Lancaster. And if you've still got energy to burn, stay a while longer and attack the Way of the Roses, a 170 mile cycle ride from Morecambe to Bridlington.
