Description

“ Lancaster’s “Top Cemetery” off Quernmore Road, is the final resting place for many of the eminent figures of Victorian Lancaster. They gave their names to local streets and roads – Dennis, Wingate-Saul, Coulston, Ashton, Blades etc. Their families commemorated them with finely engraved tombstones in the Gothic or Art Nouveau styles. The history of the City, with its different employments, is represented in a wide variety of memorials – alongside angels, draped urns, winged doves, nautical wheels. This free tour explores the symbolism of these features, funeral practices through out the ages and offers suggestions for further visits. It starts at 2pm on Sunday Afternoons - 2012 = 15th April, 20th May, 17st June, 15th July, 19th August and 16th September. Tours start at the Main Cemetery gate lodge and are lead by a member of Lancaster Civic Society.”
