Top 10 - Walks around our district

1. Morecambe Bay Cross Bay Walk - A great walk across the sands is a must for any walking enthusiast. (Crossing is only possible at low tides and with the leadership of a professional guide -  ANYONE TAKING PART IN A CROSS BAY WALK DOES SO AT THEIR OWN RISK)

2. Lunesdale Walk - A 3 day waymarked walk which travels through the rich landscapes of Lancashire's Lune Valley.

3. Lune Valley Ramble - The One Day Ramble links the City of Lancaster with the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale and traces the course of the River Lune's lower reaches through some of the North West's finest lowland countryside.

4. Carnforth Canal Walks - Explores the glorious countryside near the Lancaster Canal around the Market Town of Carnforth.

5. Clougha Pike Ascent - On Lancaster's doorstep and rewards with a sense of space, a hint of the wild and a magnificent view.

6. A walk around Silverdale - This area is an intricate patchwork of limestone ridges and crags, woodland, meadows, wetlands, salt marsh and more, with one of the richest ranges of flora in the country. The diversity is
astonishing, and this walk takes in a fair sample of it.

7. Lancaster and the Lune - It's part of Lancaster's charm that it remains a compact city, enjoying close contact with surrounding countryside. This easy walk takes full advantage, moving from the bustle of the city centre to the leisurely pace of the canal and on to the wide open spaces of the Lune Estuary.

8. Lancaster to Carnforth along the Canal - Enjoy the vast panoramas of Morecambe Bay. Being a one-way walk it feels more like a real journey, and there's no lack of choice for the return leg, including trains, buses and, more unusually, the Waterbus service on the Lancaster Canal.

9. A City Walk around Lancaster - The best way to explore Lancaster is on foot with much of its history encapsulated within its fine buildings.

10. A walk along Morecambe Promenade. Set off westwards from the town and down to the pretty village of Heysham, where the ruins of St Patrick's Chapel stands upon the mysterious and magical headland hidden beyond St Peter's Church.

For further information about any of these walks please phone the Visitor Information Centres on 01524 582394 / 01524 582808.

Or why not enjoy a walking holiday in Lancaster and the Lakes?

Meander Walking Holidays – self guided walks, B&B accommodation, your luggage transported between B&Bs.

All our routes follow this principle and are designed to provide 10 to 12 miles walking per day. They take you through the most glorious countryside Britain has to offer, with plenty of towns, villages and historical features to explore along the way. We provide you with a detailed daily guide to each days walking with suggestions for lunch, shops, toilets and things of interest, together with a map showing the route. Your Meander holiday includes bed and breakfast accommodation for each night of your holiday, situated on or a short distance from your route.

You will leave your car at the first nights accommodation (unless you travel by public transport) and be returned there at the end of your holiday. We will transport your luggage so it’s waiting for you at your next night’s accommodation.

Lancaster and The Lakes

The walk takes you into the heart of the fine cathedral city of Lancaster before heading north to Morecambe Bay and into the Lake District.

The route initially follows a circular path to the south of Lancaster taking you along the Lune estuary to the interesting port of Glasson where the canal meets the sea.  The route then heads north out of the city and over the impressive Lune aqueduct before returning you to fabulous sea views over Morecambe Bay to the Lake District beyond.
