A Walk Round Littledale
Start in Brookhouse and park near the Black Bull pub and visit the churchyard next door. Satnav ref LA2 9NX
Return to the start and at the side of the pub is Littledale Road.
Follow it uphill for approx 1 mile. Take note of 3 junctions from the left, the first and second being Moorside Road, the third being Roeburndale. After the third, ignore the farm lane and stick to the road. On your right are the 14 acres of Scout camp and Helme activity centre. 01524 60256 www.lcvys.org.uk
Do not take the right turn, but go straight on past Crossgill Farm until you reach Littledale Hall, now a Theraputic Community www.littledalehalltc.co.uk
The road continues to the left of the gate for 100 yds. At this point you take the zigzag to your left, but you could detour up the footpath rtight, which would take you through Quarry Hill Wood and up into the moors. You need an O.S. map for that. Follow the zigzag and up hill. This is the highest point on the walk at about 200m. You will come to a T junction. This is Roeburndale again. Right would take you even higher onto Claughton Moor (O.S again), but we go left and down hill round another zigzag. As you cross the stream, look right for small evidence of a former brickworks (private).
Follow the road until the T junction and a right turn brings you back onto Littledale Road. Down the hill and right onto Moorside Road, left at the end and down to the junction behind the Black Bull and possibly lunch. This walk takes about two hours - you get exercise, fresh air, old buildings, all the views, birdlife, history and even lunch.
