A Trip to Lancaster City Museum
Lancaster City Museum

This spacious Georgian building has such a vast collection of exhibits that it’s impossible to take it all in, in one stop. There are so many different things for adults to study and kids to get their hands stuck into.
Not only can you uncover the story of Lancaster, its industry, its famous characters and more, from over the centuries, but also view displays on the evolution of coastal resort Morecambe, from swimsuits to borzois, as well as other outlying towns and villages
You will have the opportunity to learn about the vast history of local places of interest, such as Giant Axe field, which is currently home to Lancaster City Football Club and was once an historic battle ground.
You can also find out more about the thriving furniture and linoleum production industries of years gone by and the celebrated men and women behind them.
As well as presenting a vivid and detailed history of the city, and surrounding areas, the building also houses the King’s Own Royal Regiment Museum, an Art Gallery and a souvenir shop. The shop is a great place to pick up some local literature or, if visiting from elsewhere, to purchase Lancaster-themed gifts to take back to family and friends.
Overall, the museum mostly appeals to local residents, particularly the older generation. There are, however, enough exhibits to entertain a newcomer to Lancaster and some fun activities for children. The activities include dressing up in Roman clothing and partaking in pop quizzes. Though, not necessarily at the same time…
Lancaster City Museum is open from Monday-Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm. The facility is closed on Christmas Day and New Year.
The Museum is FREE to enter.
